Vaiśampāyana said: Once upon a time, the mighty-armed king went to the dense forest, with hundreds of horses and elephants and accompanied by many men and mounts.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: एक समय की बात है, महाबाहु राजा सैकड़ों घोड़ों और हाथियों तथा बहुत से मनुष्यों और घुड़सवारों के साथ घने जंगल में गए।
As he progressed, he was surrounded by hundreds of warriors armed with swords, spears, clubs, maces, javelins and lances in their hands.
जैसे-जैसे वह आगे बढ़ा, हाथों में तलवारें, भाले, लाठियाँ, गदाएँ, भाले और भाले लिए हुए सैकड़ों योद्धाओं ने उसे घेर लिया।
As the king marched on, the warriors roared like lions. Conches and drums sounded. The wheels of the chariots thundered.
जैसे ही राजा आगे बढ़ा, योद्धा शेरों की तरह दहाड़ने लगे। शंख और ढोल बजने लगे। रथों के पहिये गड़गड़ाने लगे।
The huge elephants trumpeted. The horses neighed. And there was the sound of arms, all resulting in a deafening roar.
विशाल हाथी चिंघाड़ने लगे। घोड़े हिनहिनाने लगे। और हथियारों की आवाज़ थी, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप एक गगनभेदी गर्जना हुई।
Beautiful women came out on the balconies of terraced palaces to gaze upon the royal and famous warrior.
खूबसूरत महिलाएँ शाही और प्रसिद्ध योद्धा को देखने के लिए सीढ़ीदार महलों की बालकनियों पर आ गईं।
The women knew their king to be the equal of Śākra in destroying his enemies. In fending off enemy elephants, it was as if the women gazed upon the wielder of the vajra himself.
स्त्रियाँ जानती थीं कि उनका राजा शत्रुओं को नष्ट करने में शक्र के समान है। शत्रु के हाथियों से बचाव करते समय, ऐसा लग रहा था मानो महिलाओं की नज़र वज्र चलाने वाले पर ही पड़ गई हो।

They saw a tiger among men, extremely powerful in battle. The strength of his arms allowed no enemy to be alive.
उन्होंने मनुष्यों के बीच एक बाघ देखा, जो युद्ध में अत्यंत शक्तिशाली था। उनकी भुजाओं की ताकत ने किसी भी दुश्मन को जीवित नहीं रहने दिया।
Having uttered these words of praise, the women, out of love for the king, showered down flowers on his head.
प्रशंसा के ये शब्द कहकर, महिलाओं ने, राजा के प्रति प्रेम से, उसके सिर पर फूलों की वर्षा की।
Wherever he went, the best of Brāhmana-s paid homage to him along the way. Extremely pleased, he went to the forest for a hunt.
वे जहां भी गए, रास्ते में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया। वह अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर शिकार के लिए जंगल में गया।
For a long distance, the citizens and residents of the country followed the king. They were restrained from going further only on the king's instructions.
बहुत दूर तक देश के नागरिक और निवासी राजा के पीछे-पीछे चलते रहे। राजा के निर्देश पर ही उन्हें आगे जाने से रोका गया।

The lord of the earth's chariot filled the earth, even heaven, with its roar. It was like Suparṇa.
पृथ्वी के रथ के स्वामी ने अपनी गर्जना से पृथ्वी, यहाँ तक कि स्वर्ग को भी भर दिया। यह सुपर्णा की तरह था।

After progressing, the wise one saw a beautiful forest like Nandana. It was full of bilva, arka, khādira, kāpittha and dhāva trees.
आगे बढ़ने पर बुद्धिमान को नन्दना जैसा सुन्दर वन दिखाई दिया। वह बिल्व, अर्क, खदिर, कपित्थ और धव वृक्षों से भरा हुआ था।
It was uneven and full of mountains and valleys and was strewn with boulders. There was no water and no human habitations. It stretched on for many yojanā-s. This terrible forest abounded with herds of deer and other forest animals.
यह ऊबड़-खाबड़ और पहाड़ों और घाटियों से भरा हुआ था और पत्थरों से बिखरा हुआ था। वहां न तो पानी था और न ही मानव आवास। यह कई योजन तक फैला हुआ था। यह भयानक जंगल हिरणों और अन्य वन जानवरों के झुंडों से भरा हुआ था।
With the help of his servants, force and mounts, Duḥṣanta, tiger among men, killed deer of many kinds.
मनुष्यों में बाघ दुःशांत ने अपने सेवकों, बल और घुड़सवारों की सहायता से अनेक प्रकार के हिरणों को मार डाला।

बाणगोचरसंप्राप्तांस्तत्र व्याघ्रगणान्बहून् पातयामास दुःषन्तो निर्बिभेद च सायकैः
Many families of tigers were killed as they came within the reach of his arrows.
उनके बाणों की पहुँच में आने से बाघों के कई परिवार मारे गये।
Many were pierced with Duḥṣanta's arrows. That bull among men killed those that were near with his sword. Supreme among those who wield spears, he killed many in that way.
दुषान्त के बाणों से अनेक लोग घायल हो गये। मनुष्यों में से उस बैल ने अपनी तलवार से उन लोगों को मार डाला जो उसके निकट थे। भाला चलाने वालों में सर्वोच्च, उसने इस तरह से कई लोगों को मार डाला।
His valour was boundless and he was skilled in the circular motions of the club.
उसकी वीरता अपरिमित थी और वह गदा को गोलाकार गति में चलाने में कुशल था।

The great forest was perturbed by the extraordinarily powerful king and his soldiers, who loved the fight, and the larger animals fled.

The river beds were dry. Emaciated in their thirst for water and their hearts tired with exhaustion,

they dropped down unconscious, hungry, thirsty and tired. Some of them were eaten raw by those hungry tigers among men.

कई शक्तिशाली हाथी हथियारों से घायल हो गये और पागल हो गये। उन्होंने अपनी सूंडें ऊपर उठाकर जोर से प्रहार किया,
flowing blood and emitting urine and dung in fear. These wild elephants trampled to death many men.
खून बह रहा है और डर के मारे मूत्र और गोबर छोड़ रहे हैं। इन जंगली हाथियों ने कई लोगों को कुचलकर मार डाला।
With the cloud of strength and the rain of arrows, the king eliminated the once teeming forest of its large animals, as if a buffalo had run amuck.
शक्ति के बादल और बाणों की वर्षा से राजा ने कभी बड़े जानवरों से भरे हुए जंगल को नष्ट कर दिया, मानो कोई भैंसा पागल हो गया हो।
